Video on Place- Prison
This video is 2 minutes 10 seconds the action performed is the apparent buring of money in a prison like facility. The figure is unidentifiable due to mask and panty hoe, also the head is covered to further make this person unidentifiable. The music is Portis Head from the cd of the same title from 1997. The video was edited in Pinnalce Studio Plus just to add the music and slightly alter the speed in ceratin sections.

Project 3.... Location Location Location.....Project 3
This piece came togther very unrandomly. Had this random thought about what sort of places were loaded with symbology as far as site specifictity. kept thinking where can i do a project that if i do it anywhere else it wouldn't mean the same. A prison was one thought, then out a the blu a get a call askin me if i wanna go and shoot in this old prison for the afternoon one sat. Uh... Yea!Yes yes yes now.. what do i do inside this cell that will also be loaded with symbolism? MMM maybe burn some money ! this gets better and better. Had to it ittt disguised as destroying federal property is a crime even if it is money you made urself mm maybe that's not so up and up either. Good thing i'm in prison. This exercise explored strong symbols as prop and place. I can make up all sorts of b--sh--t about what i was trying to say" I think the prison system is a waste of money or lust and greed for money will consume and destroy you. " just a few, but really i think it looks kewl and it was kinda a buzz to be so criminal.

Explanation of Time Piece....
I asked myself what is time to me? How do I measure time? what are the physical characteristics of time? How do we actually experience time?
My answers were...
Time to me is a construct of man unless it manifests in natural forces.
Evidence of time is the accumulation and disappearing of materials.
Time is pregnancy and death simultaneously.
Time moves in more than one direction.
Time is composed of individual memories-this is how we may "travel" thru time and it experience more than one point in time.
This would lead me to think of time as reflections of reality or space instead of something concrete or material.
One of my sources was Andy Goldsworthy -he deals with the passage of time in his work alot. i remebered how he would accumulate materials in a certain place at a certain time and this leads to art and further exploration of our place in the world.
When i thought of others who use objects to mark time in some way I thought of cairns-which are stacks of stones in a conical shape to mark something monumental that occured. Some jewish tiribes also stack white stones at grave sites along roads.
Another source was a film about events occuring at seemingly different times but they all came together at a certain point. The theme of this Hungarian film (The Magic Hunter) was that time moves in more than one direction. Another film with a time theme was Momento -about a guy who had no memory and had to write on his body to remind him of events. This seemed like he had no concept of the passing of time which was directly affected by his memory. So back to time as memories. In the film Donnie Darko the hero learns about time travel and alters the world. A portal opens a a certain point and he uses it to manipulate events.
I chose to use stones because of the history of stacking.
I chose money because it is metal which factors in time travel and the saying cliche as it is" Time is money"
I chose mirrors because of theit obvious reflective quality and that they symbolize time as a reflection of reality. This came up with BBairn in his notion of objects viewing themselves.
The sound in the video is a Tibetan bell and dorje combined with water. The bell for me has alwayss had the ability to suspend a moment in the air. The sound of water reminds me of tihe river or flow of time continous and like a current.
The sequence of the moonflower and pregnant woman were meant to illustrate that time is death and birth and pregnancy and how these things always overlap in the world. someone is always dying as someone is being born. Time shows no favour.
i consulted the IChing and got the hexagram 39 for obstruction. time can often be an obstruction we must overcome in order to survive. Maybe we should liberate ourselves from the constraints of culturaly imposed time and truely experience for oursleves. "in our own time. Time heals all wounds. Good things come to those who wait." "Time is on my side, may you live in intersting times. time stops for no man-maybe it will for a woman."
Sources for this were many...
Donni Darko 2000 American Film directed by Richard Kelly
Andy Goldsworthy Scottish Earthworks artsit
Momento 2003 American film directed by Christopher Nolan
The Magic Hunter-hungarian Film directed by Ildiko Engedti
The I Ching-Richard Wilheim Translation 1950

Time Video
This video piece was 2 minutes and 29 seconds. The sound was a Tibetian bell and a recording of water. I was the person ringing the bell while I was video taping the images in slide show form on my laptap, the water was addded later in the video editing program Pinnacle Studio Plus. All the photographs were shot by me using a 35mm digital camera and a point and shoot. Sizes vary all except the one that was split and flipped and reattached to create the mirror effect are staright shots no manipulation.

The process...
Time Time Time...

See what's become of me-as i look around for my possibilites.....
originally i had this very grandiose sculptural piece in mind and obviously that changed to this. I was inspired by many sources many films strangely. I fight video because it is so natural to me and i like to make tangible things, but oddly time too me-is intangible in many ways. Time to me is obvious only in the accumulation of objects/ memories. Time is snow falling or rain or lightening. Time is pregnancy and death at the same time. Time is vanishing and reappearing. the term cairn rfers to stacked stones in a conical shape in or to act as a monument .
Sunset 3/21/08

These images were shot as the sun was setting with a digital 35mm point and shoot camera. There are all unaltred save for the mirror image shots. They are meant to be viewed on screen.
This was the evening that my project on time came together. I shot the photos for the video as the sun was setting and simultaneously shot images around me. The stills of the mirrors reflected the clouds overhead. I don't knnow if this will read in the video you kinda have to pay close attention. Which i learned doesn't happen ass much as it should. Mysense of time during this nite was expanded and slowed down. I watched the clouds change in the mirrors and the sky.

Explanation of Sources/Materials for Identity Project
All the eyes and mouths on the window were from my own images. The images projected were appropriated from books and have personal significance to my psyche. Also projected were self-portraits of reflections and shadows and journal collages. The vocal track used in the video was done by a dear friend and collaborator Scott Weaver from Babyshaker, the track has not been released and was taken from a demo donated by Scott.
My identity has always been about transformation and traveling. It has also been molded strongly by my amzing parents and people i am extremely lucky to call friends. I do not see myself as seperate from the world of nature and humanity even though I do feel alone often. People are mirrors for each other if we choose to look. On the subject of looking the eyes have it.... I chose eyes as a strong recurring symbol beacuse it is one obvious way we experience the world from a truely unique perspective. Artist also have to discover a voice hence the mouths. On the subject of vison I struggle part of me thinks that vision takes place on the outside and on the inside, this is why the eyes were shattered and burned to get to the interior vison. There is a celtic myth about how the Celts recieved their form of divination that resonates with me. Odin hung himself from the world tree and on the third day an eye was gouged out by a raven representing thought or memory, when this eye was gone Odin had the ability to see into the Otherworld this is were he recieved the runes of divination. The themes here are self sacrifice to achieve knowledge of an invisble but essential world. The mouths signify the artist voice mine is still being formed so the mouths were all closed.
Windows signify points of entry to me as do doors but windows are often entry points for more etherial things like light. They represent the transiton pint between outside and inside realms, hopefully i created something that expressed a temporary glimpse or "window" into moments of transition and union of forces.

Notes From Identity Project
5 Visual Anchors
traveling over water
tree roots breaking thru concrete
lightening storm in bathroom as a child
setting my room on fire
pouring water from an empty horn
first time fired a gun
Words
storm- tempest, cloudburst, hurricane , turbulent, raging, roaring, pouring, dark, violent, menacing ,threatening
shattered-broken, splintered, destroyed, crushed, gashed, crumbled, cracked, mangled
traveling-roving, wandering, sailing, voyaging, traverse, quest, adventure, orbit, wayfaring, migrating, junketeer
break-breaking-fracture, rift, split, shism, rupture, breach, eruption, bursting, division, parting, cleavage, collapse, sever
My theme seemed to be breaking through things. I like the iidea of breaking through old paradigms and habits like a root pierces concrete or lightening clears the air thick with tension to reveal clarity. Also fire is a transforming force in nature a purifing fore for the natural world. The idea that something percieved as so violent and destructive is actually a necessary function of the natural world to keep undergrowth clear in the forest so when there are fires the larger trees don't burn cause there is no underbrush or kindling to feed the fire.
I also involved a few friends in this , a couple I have known since i was 16 who have land in SC. One has an artist mind but calls himself a regular joe. It was important to have a space that i felt comfortable to perform these artistic acts of destruction, and these friends provided that. Moving around as much as I did as a child I have no fixed location as my home, home has always been the natural world, and the abstract love and support of family and a few friends. I chose music created by a deear frend as part of the video, he and I share a similar vision of a world in a state of positive destructional flux, a flux we have arole to play in. His music and lyrics have always moved me in a personal way and part of my indentity is as the "wego" not just me but like minded people desiring growth. gotta break now, class time more to come.........

Video
This video is 1 minute 55 secounds. It was shot by me at an undisclosed location in SC. I used Pinnacle Studio Plus video editing program to add my friend Scott Weaver's band Babyshakers unreleased track called Hey Virginia, the fire sound was added in the editing program. The projections were images of mine mixed with a few others including "The Dream of Reason gives Birth to Monsters" by Goya and "Hecate" by William Blake. The projection lasted a while in order to get the timing with the fire, but was edited down to what you see.

Identity 2/23/08
This was a pretty intense project for me, i just finished the video and i'm pretty fried mentally. I do have notes and ramblings that got me here but for now those will have to follow the visuals. Definately learned a few things about myself , my processes, my limits, my friends, and physical space.

Objects

Transformed by Wind- Chimes, these have to do with sound, they are combined with words which also have to do with sound.
Wrapped- The doll is wrapped in a cloak, kinda gives him a regal air-He is suspended from the tree by his feet similar to the celtic god Odin-who hung himself from the World tree in order to gain knowledge from the other worlds.
Soft- Owl Feather -combined with buried heart stone.
Luminous-Candles-symbol of individual soul.
Buried-heart stone.
Gnarly-Teeth-Symbol for underlying structure also the soul.
Cold-ice -obvious but also means Isa which is a rune for standing still and studying the inside realm.
Edible-Chocolate heart-sweetness of heart.
Distatseful-Money/Coins- Truely distasteful in many ways-also literally-yuck-do not lick coins.
Wicked-Rose- beautiful and enticing yet full of thorns.
Stretched-Wire web-I like spiders and the web is capture, ensnaring of something-in this case words or thoughts.
Alive or have Been-Mistletoe-The Golden Bough-Druids considered the plants"poisonous white berries to be drops of the oak god's semen, thus acquiring phallic significance." Some Nordic peoples refer to mistletoe as the " guide to hell".A symbol of death and eventually resurrection for "the beautiful god" Balder who was killed with a spear of mistletoe. Became symbol for access to things hidden sometimes treasure and also as a love charm for fertility-that's where the kissing part comes from.
Smeared-the mirror-unclear reflection of oneself.
Unexpected sound-magnets-symbol for the strong attractive and repulsive forces inside us all.
Awkward-Words-these i chose could be difficult things to think about or discuss.
Spill or be spilled-the glass of wine -libation offering to a "godform"
Smell-incense-carries prayers to the gods.
Fleeting and Temporal-Small prisms-the rainbow lights are by nature fleeting and temporal
Astonishing-Large Prism- Truely astonishing the bend and refracting of light to produce spectrum.
Scattered-White flower petals-symbol for transient beauty of the flesh.
